Flu season in Hong Kong: when should you vaccinate?
Timing matters. Here is how to plan your flu jab around Hong Kong’s season.
Influenza circulates year-round in Hong Kong, with the main peak usually between January and March and a smaller summer peak. Because the vaccine takes about two weeks to build protection, planning ahead makes a difference.
When to book
Autumn is the usual window, before the winter peak. If you are travelling, or your workplace has an outbreak, a doctor can advise whether a different timing makes sense for you.
Who should prioritise it
Older adults, young children, pregnant women, people with chronic conditions and anyone caring for them benefit most. Healthy adults can still reduce their chance of losing work days and passing flu to others.
What to expect
The vaccine is given as a single injection, usually in the upper arm. A sore arm or mild tiredness for a day or two is common. Serious reactions are rare.
If you have had a severe allergic reaction to a vaccine before, tell your doctor before booking.
